The Heart of the Ten Commandments: Bearing the Name of the LORD “You shall not bear the Name of the LORD your God in vain.” — Exodus 20:7 Most Christians can recite the Ten Commandments. Few stop to ask a simple question: Why are they arranged in this particular order? Are they simply ten unrelated moral rules collected together? Or do they form a carefully designed covenant document with a unified theological message? Increasingly, biblical scholars have recognized that the Decalogue is far more than a list of commandments. It possesses an intentional literary structure. At the center of that structure stands the Third Commandment. If the Third Commandment is understood not merely as, “Do not misuse God’s Name,” but rather, “Do not bear the Name of the LORD falsely or lightly,” then the entire Decalogue suddenly becomes remarkably coherent.
